GESTURE OF DEATH

A young Persian gardener tells its prince:

—Save me! I found to the Death this morning. A gesture of threat did me. This night, by miracle, wanted to be in Ispahan.

The kind prince I lend him his horses. In the afternoon, the prince finds to the Death and he asks:

—This morning, why did you do our gardener a gesture of threat?

—It was not a gesture of threat -responds him- but a gesture of surprise. Therefore it saw him far from Ispahan this morning and I should take it this night in Ispahan.

Jorge Luis Borges, Silvina Ocampo y Adolfo Bioy Casares incluyeron en su Antología de la literatura fantástica [5], con el título comúnmente aceptado de “El gesto de la Muerte”, una traducción literal del texto de Jean Cocteau con referencia explícita de la fuente. Esta versión es la más difundida
